ST GEORGE’S, July 15, 2015 – West Indies Women’s bowler Afy Fletcher will lead Grenada’s National Women’s team in a three match one day series against St. Vincent and the Grenadines from July 17 to 19 at the Grenada National Stadium beginning 10:00 am each day.
The team was selected following the completion of the Grenada Electricity Services Limited (GRENLEC) sponsored Women’s Premier League.
President of the Grenada Cricket Association (GCA) Dwain Gill spoke to Spice Isle Sports Review about why the tournament was organized.
“The main objective of the tournament is to really select the Southern Windwards team to compete in WICB Women’s Tournament scheduled for August. Grenada and St. Vincent will be playing together for the first time and the team is going to be called Southern Windwards Team and we feel it’s a good opportunity for our young ladies to get involved and to really purple themselves into the national setup and ultimately into the West Indies team.”
A number of talents will be on display for Grenada and Gill anticipates a good showing my all the ladies. “On show will be the likes of Afy Fletcher who just got back into the West Indies as well as former West Indies player Debbie-Ann Lewis those are the experienced players for Grenada. There are a host of young players, you have Rachael Cyrus, Aria fortune, Rackel Williams, and Akeira Peters. They have all played well at the inter parish level and they are hoping to carry that form into the series against St. Vincent and the Grenadines.”
Gill says a panel has already been selected for the tournament. “We have in place a selection panel headed by Steve Mahon a former Windward Islands batsman, he is now in fact a Windwards senior selector. He will chair the panel and that panel will also include members of both parties (Grenada and SVG) and the hope is that the selection panel can come up with the best players to represent the Windwards South in the West Indies Cricket Board’s (WICB) tournament in August.”
The full Grenada squad reads: Afy Fletcher – Captain, Holly Charles, Shantan Charles, Rachael Cyrus, Marilyn Ettienne, Aria Fortune, Debbie-ann Lewis, Nicole Mc Intosh, Carena Noel, Akeira Peters, Lena Peters, Mary Sylvester, Anisha Thomas and Rackel Williams
