BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, July 21, 2015 – Grenada Under 23 Netballers had to come from behind to defeat defending champions St. Lucia by 8 points in Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS)/Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) Under 23 Netball Championship being held in Basseterre, St. Kitts.
This is their fourth consecutive win in the tournament and with that victory placed one hand on the 2015 trophy with one game to play on Wednesday.
The defending champions raced to a 31-5 first quarter and went into the half with a 20-14 advantage.
Grenada battled back in the third quarter and outscored their opponents 13-7 to set up an intriguing final quarter with the scores locked on 27 all.
Led by Renisha Stafford with 35 off 49 attempts and captain Cecile Roberts five from 12, Grenada once again outscored St. Lucia in the final quarter 13-5 and went on to win 40-32.
Grenada is now the only unbeaten team in the tournament having won their four games and is now one step closer to lifting the 2015 Championship Trophy.
Captain Cecile Roberts attributed the team’s overall performance thus far to team work and skills learnt from the coaching staff. “From the beginning our team has been focused on the task at hand. We followed instructions given added to our hard work and dedication especially from our head coach and assistant coach and the entire management team.. It’s surreal for us because we have put a lot of effort into preparation for this tournament and it is an indeed proud moment for all of us as we are one way from taking the championship home.”
The girls from the Spice Isle will play host St. Kitts in their final game on Wednesday in what is expected to been a keenly contested encounter.
Grenada last won the OECS/ECCB Under 23 Netball Tournament in 2010 when the event was held in St. Vincent.
Six teams are contesting the 2015 OECS/ECCB Under 23 Netball Tournament (St. Kitts & Nevis, Dominica, Montserrat, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and St. Lucia.
