ST. GEORGE’S, July 2, 2015 – Grenada Under 23 Netballers returned home on Thursday evening from St. Kitts following their victory in the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS)/Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) Under 23 Netball Tournament which saw the “Spice Girls” dethrone 2014 Champions St. Lucia.
Grenada was the only team to play unbeaten throughout this year’s tournament having defeated St. Vincent and the Grenadines (38-35), Montserrat (66-8), Dominica (45-37), St. Lucia (40-32) and St. Kitts & Nevis in their last game (45-39).
Renisha Stafford was the lead shooter for Grenada having converted 135 off 229 attempts, followed by captain Cecile Roberts (62 off 91), Tiffany Frederick (14 off 23) and Nichel Noel (2 off3).
Tiffany Frederick was awarded best Centre Court Player of the tournament.
Speaking to Spice Isle Review President of the Grenada Netball Association Glynis Roberts was delighted with the overall support for the team. “As President it brought me great satisfaction that all our efforts that is the Executive and Council, that we are able to be here to celebrate the journey to higher heights. It is a great honour for us to have captured the title for 2015. The girls worked hard. The coaches did their very best to bring out the talents of the girls which worked in Unison to come out unbeaten in the Tournament. The addition of Coach Oberon Pitterson-Nattie to our Coaching staff was indeed pivotal to this victory. The girls displayed poise and determination particularly when they played the defending champs on Tuesday night. It was netball at its best!”
The president also highlighted keys persons who made this years’ experience one to remember. “We had the Patriotism at its best in that of our Honorary Council Betty Ann Gilbert who did a magnificent job in not only supporting the girls with her two huge flags but providing for their needs twenty four seven. We thank her publicly for our championship T-shirts and the Champagne.”
Grenada last won the Tournament in 2010 when the event was held in St. Vincent.
Six teams contested the 2015 OECS/ECCB Under 23 Netball Tournament (St. Kitts & Nevis, Dominica, Montserrat, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and St. Lucia.
