ST. GEORGE’S, June 4, 2016 – Carenage United Generation (CUG) began their journey in the Grenada National Basketball Association (GNBA) Basketball Championships with a seven point win over LA Hawks on Friday.
Led by Jefferson Jeremiah and Anderson Charles 20 and 19 points respectively, CUG went into the half up 34-17.
They continued their dominance in the third quarter and went into the final quarter up 16 points 49-33.
Hawks had a late charge in the fourth quarter and outscored their opponents 28-19 but that was not enough which saw them fall short by seven points in the end 61-68.
Top scorers for LA Hawks were Damique Walters and Oba Clarke with 13 points respectively.
Meanwhile in the opening games of the championships, Southern United had a 23-point win over New Hampshire Blazers.
Led by Andrew James’ 21 points, 2 steals and 1 assist United led through all quarters 17-12, 30-27, 58-50 and eventually going on to win 83-60.
Keston Cooper top scored for Blazers with 14 points, 2 rebounds and 4 steals.
In the other game Sissons Sparklers had a thrilling three point win over River Road Lakers.
Sparklers opening up with a 21-13 first quarter lead and went into the half up seven 37-30.
Lakers battled back in the third quarter and outscored their opponents 24-17 to level the scores 54-54 setting up an interesting final quarter.
Both teams traded the lead but it was Sparklers who emerged winners 69-66.
Elmond Williams led the way for the winners with 24 points, 6 rebounds and 1 steal while Lurkest Henry was the top scorer for Lakers with 18 points, 1 rebound, 6 steals and 5 assists.
The tournament continues this weekend with games in both Eastern and Western Zones.
In the West, 88 Ballers and Trojans do battle at the Gouyave Hard Court while RGPF will face ACS Ballers in Grenville.
Over in the East at the Carenage Hard Court, Steele Auto Tornadoes play Windsor Forest Vipers at 7:00 pm and LA Lions meet New Hampshire Blazers at 8:30 pm.
