ST. GEORGE’S, July 6, 2016 – Four (4) newcomers have been added to Grenada’s Male Under 23 Volleyball Team who will compete in the ECVA/NORCECA U23 Male Volleyball Championship carded for Antigua July 7-11.

The 11 member team left the island on Thursday accompanied by Coach Raphael Brathwaite and Manager Staciann Lake.

Speaking to Spice Isle Sports Review, Captain of the Team Nikel John is quite happy with the selectees for this tournament.

“I think the team is a very well rounded team; meaning that we are strong on the offense as well on the defense. Most of the players on the team have been together at least 3 years now so the chemistry is already there.”

John says all the work has been done and it’s now time to execute on the court.

“For the preparation aspect we started with mostly fitness training then we moved to individual training where the players are weak we focused on our polishing our week areas then we concluded with practicing as a team working on our set plays and mostly practice matches.”

Jerron Phillip, Javin Noel, Jamie Noel and Liston Guillaume are the new-comers to the team and the captain says they have fit in well into the team.

“The chemistry was always there between us and the new comers because over the year we’ve been training together but unfortunately they never made the team so they are not strangers to us.”

John further highlighted some of the weak and strong areas that the team has.

“One of our strong area is our service. I believe that’s our weapon because we can knock the other teams out of system. That coupled with our spiking and blocking can cause trouble any team. On the other hand, our major weak areas are defending the ball back court in case and our decision making in tight situation is poor.”

Nikel John has been playing volleyball for five (5) years and he believes that his experience will help him as captain of the team.

“The leadership trait was always there in me and I am fully capable of motivating the team in good times and bad so I’ll say I’m fully prepared to take up the role of captain and lead the team to victory.  This tournament I am looking firstly for victory to bring the gold medal back to Grenada and to live up to our coach’s expectations because he have a lot of faith in this team and personally I am looking to receive the award of “best blocker” because my position on the court is a middle blocker and anything else will be a plus.”

The full team reads: Nikel John (Captain), Jerron Phillip, Isaac Nelson, Kevon Noel, Liston Guillaume, Dwane Walcott, Jamie Noel, Javin Noel, Jernel John, Antonio John and Trevon Benjamin.
